Kraken vs Binance: Fee Differences and When Switching Pays

Updated 2026-09-21

For a low-volume crypto spot trade, Binance's regular 0.1% fee is lower than Kraken Pro's current Tier 1 rates of 0.4% maker and 0.8% taker. That does not settle the whole choice: Kraken's better account tiers, cash funding routes and regional availability can change what works for you. Compare Kraken Pro with Binance Spot, not instant-buy checkout prices.

A 1,000 USDT spot trade: what would each charge?

For a crypto spot pair such as BTC/USDT, assume a 1,000 USDT fill, Binance’s regular tier and Kraken Pro Tier 1. These figures exclude promotions, BNB deductions and referral rewards.

Fill typeBinance SpotKraken Pro Tier 1
Maker0.1% → 1 USDT0.4% → 4 USDT
Taker0.1% → 1 USDT0.8% → 8 USDT

A second fill to sell also incurs a fee. The comparison does not include deposits, withdrawals, the bid–ask spread or slippage. Kraken has separate schedules for some products and stablecoin/FX pairs; do not apply this table to every market.

Your Kraken tier may be better than Tier 1

Kraken revised Pro fees in July 2026. Its tier framework can take eligible trading activity and assets on platform into account. An existing customer may therefore pay less than the starter rate shown above.

An asset-based tier is not necessarily locked for the month. Kraken measures that asset value at a point in time, not as a 30-day average. Withdrawals or falling prices can change the tier. If you move funds away, recheck the rate on the remaining account instead of assuming its old discount survives.

Check the fee displayed for your actual account and pair before moving funds. Do not trade extra volume or transfer savings to an exchange solely to reach a discount: the extra trading costs and custody exposure may outweigh it.

On Binance, BNB deductions and the 20% trading fee reward can reduce eligible costs. The fee calculator keeps these separate so you can see the fee charged and the cost after reward, without adding discount percentages together.

Does a cheaper trade justify moving your funds?

The taker example above saves 7 USDT per 1,000 USDT trade. Suppose moving the funds adds a one-off 8 USDT cost. One trade would not cover it; two equal-sized fills would exceed it in trading-fee savings alone. The 8 USDT is a hypothetical transfer cost, not Kraken’s current withdrawal quote.

Divide one-off switching cost by saving per trade, then include future withdrawals and execution differences. If the per-trade saving is zero or negative, there is no break-even trade count from that fee difference.

When can Kraken still be the practical choice?

If your country, bank and currency are well supported and the cash-out route works for you, that convenience can matter more than the headline trading rate. Compare any deposit charge, transfer delay and withdrawal fee before deciding.

For an immediate transfer to your wallet, also check the payment-method hold. Kraken ACH Plaid deposits have a seven-day withdrawal hold; some card or digital-wallet purchases can trigger 72 hours. Use the notice for your transaction. Trading can remain available during a hold, and placing the trade through Pro does not remove it.

Access also differs by location and product. Neither “Kraken is available” nor “Binance is available” guarantees that every token, derivative or payment method is available to your account. Binance.com is separate from Binance.US, and the offer on this page belongs to Binance.com.

Which is easier for a beginner?

An instant-buy screen may be simpler, but its quoted price is not the same thing as a Pro order-book fee. If you use a trading screen, learn the difference between market orders, resting limit orders and immediately matched limit orders first. The last of those can still pay a taker fee.

For your first transfer, make sure both platforms support the same asset and network, including any memo or tag. An exchange with a lower trading fee is not useful if your money cannot arrive or leave by the route you need.

What should decide the choice?

For repeated crypto spot orders at the starter tiers above, Binance has the lower displayed trading charge. For an occasional purchase, a better funding route or an existing Kraken tier may be more important. Use your own trade size and account rates, then include the cost of eventually withdrawing.

If Binance fits, the registration guide explains BNBTOMOON and the 20% fee reward. If you are still comparing options, Coinbase vs Binance covers the distinction between simple-buy pricing and order-book trading.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kraken cheaper than Binance?

Not in the Tier 1 crypto-spot example here. Binance's regular 0.1% rate is below Kraken Pro's 0.4% maker and 0.8% taker rates. Higher Kraken tiers, special pairs, funding costs and actual execution can change the comparison for your account.

Why do older comparisons show different Kraken fees?

Kraken updated its Pro tier structure in July 2026. Older starter rates may be outdated. Use the current schedule and your account's assigned tier; volume and eligible assets on platform can affect that tier.

Are Kraken and Kraken Pro the same fee model?

No. Kraken Pro order-book trading uses maker/taker tiers. Instant-buy and other checkout products can have different charges and a spread. Compare the same trading method on both platforms.

Does the Binance reward apply to withdrawal fees?

No. The 20% offer described here concerns eligible trading fees, not network withdrawal charges, funding payments or slippage. It is for Binance.com and is not a Binance.US or Binance Wallet offer.
