How to Trade Binance Futures: Your First Position, Step by Step

Updated 2026-10-05

Check that Futures is available to your account, then transfer collateral to the matching wallet and choose the contract, direction and order. Once it fills, watch liquidation risk and funding. When you exit, confirm the position is zero and check the fees.

What do you need before opening a position?

Opening a BTCUSDT perpetual creates contract price exposure, not BTC you can withdraw. If you want to buy and hold BTC, use Binance spot instead; Futures adds margin, funding and liquidation risk.

First check whether Binance.com offers Futures where you actually live and whether your verified account is eligible. Being able to register or trade spot does not establish Futures access. Binance.US is a separate service and does not use this flow.

Then choose the contract family. USDⓈ-M contracts settle in supported stablecoins such as USDT or USDC, while COIN-M contracts settle in cryptocurrency. BTCUSDT perpetual and BTCUSD COIN-M perpetual are different products; verify the symbol, settlement asset and contract type before preparing collateral.

USDT received through Binance P2P may still be in Funding, and a Spot balance is not automatically available as Futures collateral. Use the account’s internal Transfer control to move only the amount you intend to make available into the matching Futures wallet. This is an internal transfer, not a blockchain withdrawal, so it does not require a deposit network.

What do you choose when opening a position?

Order-screen choiceWhat to check on a first order
Symbol and contract typeConfirm the exact contract, including USDⓈ-M or COIN-M and perpetual or dated expiry.
Long or shortA long gains when the contract price rises and loses when it falls; a short has the opposite exposure. This guide does not choose a direction for you.
Cross or IsolatedIsolated assigns margin to this position; Cross can share eligible collateral and let other positions affect the available buffer.
Leverage and notionalLeverage changes required margin, but price P&L and trading fees are based on position notional—not only the collateral deposited.
Limit or market, price and quantityA limit order caps the acceptable price but can still be a taker if it matches immediately. A market order is more likely to fill at once and is more exposed to book depth and slippage.

Review the resulting position notional, estimated liquidation price and required margin before submitting Buy/Long or Sell/Short. Clicking the button does not prove the position is open; confirm the order filled and a non-zero position appears.

What should you estimate before submitting?

Suppose 1,000 USDT of margin supports a 5,000 USDT position. A 1% adverse price move is about a 50 USDT trading loss, or 5% of that starting margin, before fees and funding. This is a linear illustration, not a liquidation formula; maintenance margin, Mark Price and other account conditions also matter.

A filled entry and exit can each incur a trading fee. With a 5,000 USDT entry and exit notional and a 0.05% taker rate shown by your account, entry costs 2.50 USDT and exit costs another 2.50 USDT. If a long crosses one settlement at a positive 0.01% funding rate, it pays about 0.50 USDT more: 5.50 USDT before spread or slippage. These are example inputs, not a universal Binance quote.

Check the live Binance funding monitor for your contract’s current rate, next settlement and estimated payment.

Use the Binance trading-fee calculator with your actual account rate. BNBTOMOON is configured for a 20% reduction on eligible Binance Futures trading fees; it applies to entry and exit commissions, not funding, liquidation clearance charges, spread, slippage or losses. Region, account and product eligibility still apply under Binance’s Futures referral terms.

Which numbers matter after the position opens?

Do not look only at the candle and the P&L number. Read these together:

Position dataWhat it tells you
Mark PriceBinance uses it for unrealized P&L and liquidation checks; it can differ from the last traded price on a candle.
Liquidation price and margin ratioThese show how close the position is to liquidation and whether its margin condition is deteriorating.
Cross or IsolatedOther positions and available collateral can affect a Cross position; an Isolated position depends on the margin assigned to it.
Next funding timeA perpetual position open at settlement may pay or receive funding. Use the interval and rate displayed for that contract.

This is why a position can liquidate even when the last price on your chart has not reached the number you remembered. A stop-loss is not insurance either: trigger choice, price protection, order type, liquidity and fast movement can affect execution.

If the displayed liquidation price differs from your calculation, check Mark Price, margin ratio, margin mode and any other open orders or positions. Do not infer a safe distance from leverage alone. Adding collateral changes the buffer but does not erase an existing loss.

How do you close without opening the opposite position?

Prefer the position panel’s Close control or a reduce-only order that clearly decreases the current position. A regular order in the opposite direction can reduce the existing position or open opposite exposure depending on the position mode and order settings; the button direction alone is not enough.

After submitting the close, verify that the position size actually reaches zero. Take-profit and stop-loss instructions attached to the position are generally cancelled automatically, but separately placed limit or conditional orders still need a check. Cancel anything you no longer want so it cannot create unexpected exposure later.

Finally, use Trade History to check entry and exit fills and commission, Transaction History to check funding or liquidation charges, and the Futures wallet to confirm the remaining balance. If you are comparing venues, the Hyperliquid vs Binance guide applies the same position scenario to fees, funding, transfers and custody.

Frequently asked questions

Why is there no position after I submit an order?

Check Open Orders or Order History to see whether it filled. A limit order may remain open because the price has not matched, or it may have filled only partly. Do not submit the same order again just because the full position is not visible yet.

What should I check if my close order fails?

Read the on-screen error and check whether existing orders have reserved some of the position's closable size. An unfilled limit close will not immediately remove the position either. Verify order status and position size before cancelling or changing the close order.

Can I switch between Cross and Isolated with an open position?

Binance says the setting applies to the selected contract and cannot be changed while that contract has open orders or positions. Check the mode before submitting an order rather than assuming a later switch will protect an existing position.

Why are orders still open after my position reaches zero?

Take-profit and stop-loss instructions attached to the position are generally cancelled when that position closes, but separately placed limit or conditional orders still need a check. Review their direction and purpose, and cancel any you no longer want.

Where is my remaining USDT after I close?

Closing does not automatically move the balance back to Spot. Check the corresponding Futures wallet and any open orders, then use the account's Transfer control to move the available amount back to Spot. The transferable amount is the one shown in your account.
